Piauí Military Police Lieutenant dies after physical fitness test

José Luzia da Silva, a 63-year-old First Lieutenant of the Piauí Military Police, died after suffering a sudden medical emergency following a physical fitness test (TAF) in Teresina.

According to the Military Police, the officer experienced sudden malaise while at rest after completing one of the stages of the test, which led to cardiorespiratory arrest. He was treated by a Military Police Hospital ambulance and rushed to the Hospital de Urgência de Teresina (HUT), where medical staff attempted resuscitation, but he did not survive.

The physical fitness test was part of a process for his promotion to the rank of captain. The Military Police noted that the officer had previously submitted medical examinations proving he was fit to participate in the test. The institution stated that a health complication occurring after physical exertion does not, by itself, establish a definitive cause or a direct link to the test, noting that the cause of death depends on clinical and medico-legal findings.
