Piauí municipalities receive federal drought emergency recognition

The Brazilian federal government has officially recognized a state of emergency due to drought in five municipalities in the state of Piauí. The recognition, formalized through Ordinance No. 3.032 and published in the Official Gazette of the Union, allows these local governments to seek federal funding to combat the effects of the water crisis.

The affected municipalities are Jacobina do Piauí, São José do Piauí, São Miguel do Tapuio, Francisco Macedo, and Novo Oriente do Piauí. While these cities were previously included in a state-level emergency decree issued by the Piauí government in August, the federal recognition enables them to access resources directly from the Union.

To obtain funding, municipal governments must submit a work plan to the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development via the Integrated Disaster Information System (S2iD). These plans must detail local needs, planned actions, and estimated operational costs. Following a technical analysis by the National Civil Defense, approved requests will be formalized through new ordinances specifying the funds to be released.
