Picanya commemorates second anniversary of DANA disaster
The town of Picanya has inaugurated a new sculpture, titled ‘Lágrimas que abrazan’ (Tears that Embrace), on the Bridge of Memory to mark the second anniversary of the DANA weather event that devastated the region.
Created by Valencian artist Jose Piñero, the three and a half meter tall monument depicts two hands formed by thousands of water droplet shapes. The sculpture is located on a bridge that was itself rebuilt after being destroyed by floodwaters during the disaster. The memorial serves as a tribute to the victims and an expression of gratitude toward the volunteers and institutions that assisted in the recovery efforts.
Local residents expressed the lasting emotional impact of the event, noting the difficulty of forgetting the tragedy and reflecting on the changes the disaster brought to the community.
