Pichai urges Thailand to address economic challenges following IMF-World Bank meetings
Former Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has commended the success of the IMF–World Bank 2026 meetings held in Bangkok, noting that the event allowed Thailand to demonstrate its potential to the global community. He urged the government to build upon this momentum by addressing four critical economic challenges.
First, the government must manage energy price volatility and inflation caused by international conflicts, potentially through fuel excise tax reductions to support SMEs and citizens. Second, addressing high public and household debt is essential; Pichai suggested focusing on long-term GDP growth and productivity rather than just short-term measures.
Third, the rapid advancement of AI presents both a risk and an opportunity. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted that Thailand is integrating quickly into the AI value chain. To capitalize on this, Pichai recommended accelerating the development of an AI ecosystem, including data centers, cloud systems, and GPU technology. Finally, the government must navigate regulatory hurdles to ensure Thailand remains competitive in attracting technological investment.
