Pichanal Mayor charged after fatal traffic accident in Jujuy

Julio Antonio Jalit, the mayor of Pichanal, has been provisionally charged with involuntary manslaughter following a fatal traffic accident in Calilegua, Jujuy. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026, on National Route 34.

Jalit was driving a grey Toyota Hilux belonging to the Municipality of Pichanal when it collided with a black Guerrero Trip motorcycle. The motorcyclist, identified as 40-year-old Rubén Marino Guitián, was returning from his workday at the Ledesma company in the Yapeyú sector. Guitián suffered severe head trauma and died instantly at the scene.

The collision caused the motorcycle to strike the asphalt while the Hilux veered off the road, ending up in an irrigation canal. The Ministerio Público de la Acusación (MPA) of Jujuy is conducting a criminal investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash and establish legal responsibility. Jalit has reportedly established a residence in Jujuy to remain available to the judicial authorities.
