Pichanal Mayor charged with manslaughter after fatal motorcycle collision
Julio Antonio Jalit, the mayor of Pichanal, has been formally charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter following a fatal traffic accident on National Route 34. The incident occurred on August 18 near the northern access to Calilegua, involving a municipal Toyota Hilux driven by Jalit and a motorcycle operated by 40-year-old Rubén Marino Guitián.
Guitián, an employee of Ingenio Ledesma, died at the scene due to severe head trauma after the collision. While one investigative hypothesis suggests the municipal vehicle may have been traveling at high speed and struck the motorcycle from behind, the exact mechanics of the crash remain under investigation. A key accidentology report from a criminologist is pending to determine the precise circumstances of the impact.
During the legal proceedings, Jalit exercised his right to remain silent. Although a breathalyzer test returned a zero alcohol result, the investigation continues. Additionally, the mayor's defense confirmed a $310 million settlement agreement for the victim's family, though this does not preclude potential criminal liability.
