Pichetto Fratin calls for enhanced climate adaptation in Italy
Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, has emphasized the urgent need to strengthen national capacities for climate change prevention and adaptation. Speaking at an institutional event in Milan focused on sustainable energy and innovation, the Minister noted that extreme heat is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a profound climatic shift.
To address challenges such as drought and water scarcity, Pichetto Fratin called for an integrated system coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (Mase). This framework aims to connect the government, research institutes, local authorities, and various stakeholders to ensure effective resource management and timely intervention.
The Minister also highlighted the increasing risk of wildfires in Mediterranean areas, exacerbated by extreme weather and human activity. He stressed that the focus must shift from emergency management to proactive prevention through territory maintenance, surveillance, and institutional coordination.
