Pick of the Crop initiative expands across Queensland schools
The Pick of the Crop initiative, led by Health and Wellbeing Queensland, has reached a major milestone by expanding its reach to schools across the state, including the Darling Downs and North Queensland. Launched in 2021, the program integrates kitchen, garden, and curriculum activities to teach students about the origins of fresh produce.
Through the initiative, students participate in planting, growing, picking, and eating various fruits and vegetables. Regional coordinators work with state schools to implement customized action plans that may include gardening, classroom learning, and grower connections.
To date, the program has reached 300 schools and more than 70,000 students. Health and Wellbeing Queensland Chief Executive Dr. Robyn Littlewood stated that the program aims to build healthy eating habits from an early age and support schools in creating a positive food culture.
