Pickleball growth driven by social connection and tennis pros
Pickleball has emerged as the fastest-growing sport in the United States, with participation rising from 4.2 million players in 2020 to over 24 million in 2025. Beyond physical exercise, the sport is noted for its social benefits, particularly for older adults. Research suggests the game's structure—featuring rotating partners and easy conversation—may help combat loneliness, a condition reported by approximately one in three adults aged 50 to 80.
The sport is also attracting professional tennis players, though the transition varies in success. While some athletes like Jack Sock achieved immediate success, others, such as Donald Young and Sam Querrey, have faced a significant learning curve. Experts note that while tennis skills are foundational, pickleball requires a distinct set of technical demands and adaptations to the smaller court and different equipment.
