Pickleball popularity drives new tournaments and rising injury concerns

The popularity of pickleball is driving both community engagement and a rise in sports-related injuries. In East Wenatchee, the first Wenatchee Valley Pickleball Classic Tournament is scheduled for October 10th and 11th at Eastmont Community Park. The event features various divisions, including men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles, as well as singles competitions.

In Australia, the Illawarra region is experiencing a pickleball boom, but medical professionals are warning of a surge in injuries. Dr. Meghan Dares of the Joint Vision Orthopaedic Group noted that many players underestimate the physical strain of the sport, mistakenly believing it is low-impact due to the smaller court size.

Data indicates that a significant portion of pickleball-related Achilles tendon ruptures occur during a player’s first month, with one-third happening during the very first session. The injuries are most prevalent among two demographics: athletes in their early 20s and “weekend warriors” aged 50 to 70. Estimates suggest over 114,000 people are playing the sport in Australia across these age groups.
