Pickleball popularity in Vietnam linked to rising injury risks
Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Vietnam due to its accessibility, low cost, and community connection. However, medical professionals are reporting an alarming increase in related injuries.
Dr. Pham Son Tung from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at E Hospital notes that many players mistakenly believe pickleball is a gentle sport. Despite having smaller courts than tennis, the game requires high-intensity movements, including sudden acceleration, abrupt stops, lateral shifts, and powerful overhead smashes.
Common injuries include ankle sprains, shoulder pain, knee swelling, and elbow pain. Ankle sprains are particularly frequent, often caused by rapid lateral movement, improper landing, unsuitable footwear, or slippery surfaces. Many players, particularly middle-aged individuals or those returning to exercise after long periods of inactivity, are at higher risk as their muscles, tendons, and joints may not be prepared for the sudden intensity.
