Picnic data shows families prefer simple, quick meals in 2026

An analysis by the online supermarket Picnic reveals that families in 2026 are prioritizing simple, quick, and practical meals. Data shows that the most popular family recipes typically consist of only four to six ingredients and can be prepared in under 20 minutes.

According to the report, potatoes remain a staple in German households. The most frequently cooked recipe among Picnic customers is 'One-Pot-Knödel mit Brokkoli und Hack' (One-pot dumplings with broccoli and minced meat). Other top dishes include gyros with herb quark, fish sticks with mashed potatoes, and cheeseburger pasta.

Beyond cooking, the study highlights challenges in meal planning. A survey of 1,306 families indicates that more than one-third of families coordinate multiple times a week or daily regarding what to eat. Approximately 60 percent of families spend more than 30 minutes per week searching for recipe ideas and planning meals.
