Picnicking emerges as a major summer trend in France

Picnicking has emerged as a major summer ritual in France, according to a YouGov study conducted for Airbnb. Approximately 71% of French people consider it an essential summer activity, making it the second most popular way to eat lunch during vacations, trailing only restaurants.

The trend is manifesting in two distinct ways. One segment is driven by economic necessity, as tightening holiday budgets lead people to seek affordable outdoor dining options. Conversely, a new 'quiet luxury' trend has emerged, where high-end picnic experiences—featuring designer items like Hermès baskets—serve as a marker of social distinction.
