Pico Airport runway expansion to cost 24 million euros

The expansion of the runway at Pico Airport is projected to cost approximately 24 million euros, a reduction from the initial estimate of 30 million euros. According to a report by a working group established by the Azores Government, the project involves extending the runway westward by 690 meters to reach a total length of 2,345 meters.

The Pico Airport Group (GAPix) has welcomed the recommendation, noting that it aligns with proposals they have advocated for since 2021. The expansion is intended to improve aircraft operational conditions, enhance safety, and mitigate issues caused by wet runways and unfavorable winds, which have previously led to flight cancellations and operational limitations.

If the project secures the anticipated 85% in community funding, the financial burden on the Autonomous Region of the Azores could be reduced to between 3.6 and 4.5 million euros. The project is currently slated for completion by the end of 2029, though GAPix is calling for an accelerated timeline. Key next steps include obtaining approvals from the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and UNESCO, conducting environmental studies, and launching the tender process.
