Pied stork banded in Hungary identified in Burkina Faso

A pied stork banded in Soponyán, Hungary, has been identified in Burkina Faso, marking the first time a bird banded in Hungary has been recorded in that West African nation.

The bird was originally banded by Krisztián Király on August 7, 2024. It was subsequently identified by Michael Ange in Burkina Faso on September 24, 2026. This sighting provides critical data for researchers studying the migration patterns and wintering habitats of the species.

While the pied stork is a rare breeder in Hungary, it is a regular migrant. The species typically winters in the central and western Mediterranean, the West African coast, and regions south of the Sahara. Although the European population is considered stable, experts note that the development and transformation of natural riverbanks pose a threat to their habitats.
