Mosquito species show distinct preferences for human hosts

Research published in the journal iScience reveals that different mosquito species exhibit distinct preferences for human hosts based on unique chemical and microbial signatures. A study conducted in Miami, Florida, analyzed 119 participants to observe the attraction levels of three specific species: Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito), Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito), and Culex quinquefasciatus (southern house mosquito).

The findings indicate that no single individual was highly attractive to all three species simultaneously. Instead, each species utilizes different cues. Aedes aegypti showed a slight preference for males and specific skin bacteria patterns. Aedes albopictus was attracted to high levels of ketones and plant-like volatile compounds secreted by the skin. Culex quinquefasciatus, which is active at night, responded to the microscopic ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and microbes living on the skin.

Scientists believe that isolating the specific components of human odor that attract or repel these insects could lead to more targeted strategies for combating vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and West Nile virus.
