Piedmont Region approves proposal to rename Camino to Camino Monferrato

The Piedmont Regional Council has approved a resolution proposing to change the name of the municipality of Camino to ‘Camino Monferrato’. The proposal, introduced by Regional Councilor for Local Authorities Enrico Bussalino, responds to a request from the municipality located in the province of Alessandria.

The change aims to formally recognize the historical, cultural, and geographical ties between Camino and the Monferrato region. Historical records indicate that Camino and its hamlets were under the rule of the Marquises of Monferrato starting in the 13th century, a connection that persisted after the Duchy of Monferrato was annexed to the House of Savoy in 1708.

Regional councilors Enrico Bussalino and Federico Riboldi stated that the addition is not merely a formal modification but a recognition of identity. They noted that the new name is intended to improve geographic identification and strengthen the town's visibility in national and international tourism circuits. The proposal must now move to the Regional Council for final approval in accordance with regional law.
