Piedmont swimming pool operators declare emergency over energy costs

Swimming pool operators in Piedmont, Italy, have declared a state of emergency due to soaring energy costs. Marco Sublimi, president of GES. PI. and vice president of Congepi, warned that many facilities face potential closure without immediate structural interventions.

The crisis is driven by massive increases in utility prices. Electricity costs (PUN) are projected to rise by approximately 91.9%, from 109.08 €/MWh to 209.30 €/MWh. Methane gas prices (PSV) are expected to increase by over 125%, rising from roughly 0.373 €/Smc to 0.841 €/Smc.

Sublimi emphasized that pools are essential for health, rehabilitation, sport, and social inclusion, but are inherently high-consumption facilities requiring constant electricity for filtration, lighting, and ventilation, as well as gas for heating. Industry representatives are currently contacting the national government for emergency relief and have called upon the Piedmont Region and local mayors to meet and find solutions to prevent facility closures.
