Piedras Negras officials clash over school coordination and safety

In Piedras Negras, Coahuila, a political disagreement has emerged between Mayor Jacobo Rodríguez and Subsecretary Sonia Villarreal regarding the coordination of educational support. Villarreal announced she will not attend a meeting convened by the Mayor, citing a lack of institutional respect. She criticized Rodríguez’s response to her coordination proposals as dismissive, stating that effective work requires dialogue and mutual respect.

Instead of attending the municipal meeting, Villarreal announced a direct service table at the Universidad Politécnica de Piedras Negras. This initiative aims to allow parents, teachers, and directors to present reports and requests directly to the ICIFED, the Secretary of Education, and the Secretary of Government.

Separately, Mayor Rodríguez addressed recent student brawls at a local secondary school. He called on parents to reinforce values and discipline at home, noting that while teachers provide academic knowledge, character formation begins with the family. The Mayor pledged to increase municipal oversight in schools and maintain a presence of traffic enforcement officers near campuses to ensure student safety during arrival and departure times.
