Piekar Śląskie authorities oppose new mining exploration

The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment has granted a concession to Ferrite Resources Polska for the exploration and recognition of zinc and lead ore deposits in the Dąbrówka Wielka district of Piekar Śląskie.

Despite three negative opinions from the local municipal authorities, the ministry authorized the geological work. The project involves drilling nine exploratory holes and collecting samples, with works scheduled to begin on August 27 and conclude by March 1. The company is required to decommission the boreholes following the study.

Local officials have expressed strong opposition, stating they will use all available legal steps to prevent the return of the mining industry to the area. The municipality emphasized that while the current work is limited to private plots and is not a mining concession itself, they remain committed to protecting the city from the environmental and infrastructural consequences associated with underground exploitation. Mining activities in the region had previously ceased on January 31, 2020, with the closure of the local coal mine.
