Italy healthcare faces staffing shortages and rising waiting lists

Italy's healthcare system faces widespread challenges, including staffing shortages, long waiting lists, and infrastructure issues. In the Chieti region, Asl Lanciano Vasto Chieti is reorganizing its gastroenterology and endoscopy network to address waiting lists that have exceeded guarantee periods for procedures like colonoscopies.

Staffing crises are evident in several areas. In Como, Varese, and Sondrio, the delay in implementing border allowances is driving medical professionals toward Switzerland. Similarly, in Parma, unions report difficulties in attracting and retaining staff due to uncompetitive economic conditions. In Salerno, the 118 emergency services are facing organizational collapse due to severe personnel shortages, leading to unsustainable shifts for workers.

Infrastructure and access issues also persist. In Molise, the lack of pediatric services in the Alto Molise area has prompted legal action. In Castellamonte, a technical failure at a dialysis center has forced the redirection of patients to other facilities, causing logistical strain. Additionally, the Make Sense Campaign is promoting awareness for head and neck cancer prevention, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis.

To support vulnerable populations, new initiatives are emerging, such as the SA. MI. RA. clinic in Palazzo San Gervasio, which provides medical assistance and temporary residency codes for seasonal migrant workers. Meanwhile, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, an agreement has been reached to integrate family doctors into community houses by October.
