Piemonte receives 16,000 signatures for assisted dying law

Campaigners have delivered 16,000 signatures to the Piemonte Regional Council in support of the “Liberi Subito” (Free Immediately) legislative proposal regarding medically assisted death. The number of signatures collected is double the amount required by law. The initiative was organized by the Luca Coscioni Association through a network of volunteers and activists across 626 municipalities.

The proposed law aims to regulate the regional health service to establish clear procedures for individuals seeking medical assistance in dying, without infringing upon national criminal or civil laws. This follows a Constitutional Court ruling (204/2025) which clarified that regions have the authority to organize health service modalities in this area.

The petition includes support from 41 mayors across the region, including the mayors of Torino and Cuneo. Supporters, including regional councilors from the AVS party, have called for a responsible and serious discussion on the matter to ensure dignity and respect for patients and their families.
