Piemonte wine producers reduce yields despite high-quality harvest
In the Piemonte region of Italy, wine producers are intentionally reducing production volumes despite a high-quality grape harvest for 2026. Filippo Mobrici, president of the Consorzio Barbera d’Asti, described the harvest as a ‘five-star’ crop in terms of both quantity and quality, noting that early harvesting began in late July.
Despite extreme summer heat with temperatures reaching 40°C in some areas, the vines maintained sufficient water reserves due to heavy precipitation during the winter and early spring. To protect the grapes from intense solar radiation, viticulturists maintained more foliage than usual.
However, producers are reducing yields from 9 tons to 8.5 tons per hectare to address market imbalances. Italian wineries are currently facing high inventory levels and slowing sales, driven by shifting consumer behavior, international conflicts, and US tariffs.
