European Union: Maran calls for common industrial policy

Pierfrancesco Maran, a Democratic Party MEP and President of the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, has advocated for the creation of a common European industrial policy. He argues that such a policy is necessary to complement existing agricultural support and to accelerate progress in critical sectors like artificial intelligence, satellite technology, defense, and the automotive industry.

Maran suggests that the primary challenge is not the size of the EU budget, but the ability to pool sufficient resources for a unified industrial plan. Regarding the automotive sector, he noted that the current crisis is not caused by the Green Deal, but rather by shifting market dynamics where Chinese manufacturers are now competing heavily in Europe. He emphasized the need for “made in Europe” requirements to protect local companies and workers.

On energy security, Maran stated that the Green Deal serves to reduce external dependency, noting that gas supplies from regions like Russia cannot be fully trusted. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of balancing climate objectives with industrial competitiveness and social consensus to ensure the long-term viability of European ecological transitions.
