Rai apologizes for controversial interview on BellaMa’

Rai’s Daytime Entertainment Division has issued an official apology following a controversial interview on the program ‘BellaMa’’. The network expressed regret for the tones used during the segment, describing them as inadequate and excessive regarding the principles of balance and respect required for public service broadcasting.

The controversy stems from host Pierluigi Diaco’s questioning of Alberto Ravagnani, a former priest and current contestant on ‘Ballando con le Stelle’. Diaco directed highly personal questions toward Ravagnani regarding his sexual orientation and private life following his departure from the priesthood.

While Rai apologized for the manner of the exchange, the network maintained the legitimacy of asking incisive questions within journalistic practice. Pierluigi Diaco has defended his actions, stating that his questions were a legitimate part of journalism based on the public narrative Ravagnani has shared about his life. Meanwhile, consumer advocacy group Codacons has called for Diaco’s resignation and the temporary suspension of the program.
