Piero Taruffi: Remembering the pioneering racing engineer

The motorsport community marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Piero Taruffi, born October 12, 1906, in Albano Laziale. Known as a pioneering ‘flying engineer,’ Taruffi was a rare figure who combined professional engineering expertise with elite racing talent on both two and four wheels.

Taruffi’s racing career began in his teens, progressing from motorcycle hill climbs to significant victories in car racing. His technical acumen led him to work with major manufacturers, including Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Bugatti. In 1931, he was recruited by Enzo Ferrari, though the relationship was often marked by tension due to Taruffi’s desire to influence technical decisions.

Despite facing career-threatening injuries, such as a serious accident during the 1934 Tripoli Grand Prix, Taruffi continued to compete and innovate. He achieved notable success in various disciplines, including the Italian Speed Championship and setting multiple speed and distance records with motorcycles he helped design.
