Italy wins five medals on opening day of European Rowing Championships in Varese
On the first day of finals at the European Rowing Championships in Varese, the Italian team secured five podium places – two golds, one silver and two bronzes. Gold medals were claimed in the lightweight double events: Tito Christoforakis and Giovanni Borgonovo won the men’s race, while Elena Sali and Melissa Schincariol triumphed in the women’s race. The mixed PR3 four earned a silver with Martina Osualdini, Marco Frank, Carolina Foresti, Stanislau Litvinchuk and coxswain Chiara Reto. Bronze medals went to the women’s pair Laura Meriano and Alice Codato and the men’s pair Matteo Lodo and Giovanni Codato, both finishing narrowly behind Romania and the Czech Republic.
The medal ceremony was attended by Italy’s Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, who presented the awards. In a separate European championship discipline, Italy added a bronze in artistic swimming in Paris, where Filippo Pelati and Lucrezia Ruggiero placed third in the mixed free duet.
These results underline Italy’s strong performance across multiple water‑sport disciplines at this year’s European championships.
