Pierre Bonnard exhibition to focus on intimate studies of Marthe

The Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet will host an exhibition titled ‘Bonnard intime. Marthe at her Toilette’ from June 27 to October 31, 2026. The exhibition is the first to focus exclusively on Pierre Bonnard’s depictions of his wife, Marthe, at her dressing table.

Bonnard, a prominent 20th-century colorist and member of the Nabi Brotherhood, used these intimate domestic scenes to explore form, color, and the interplay of mirrors and gazes. The accompanying catalogue will feature a dialogue between paintings, gouaches, watercolours, ink and pencil drawings, and photographs.

Bonnard’s work often emphasized the warmth of French sunlight through rich tones, such as burnt sienna and crimson, particularly in his depictions of interior spaces. Many of his celebrated works were created following his move to Vernonnet in 1912.
