Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang retires from Gabon national team
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the captain and all-time leading scorer for the Gabon national football team, has announced his retirement from international duties. The 37-year-old striker cited feelings of humiliation and damage to his reputation following the team’s performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Following Gabon’s exit from the tournament in the group stage, the Gabonese government, led by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, took several disciplinary actions. These included dismissing the coaching staff, suspending the national team, and sidelining veteran players Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga. Aubameyang expressed that the experience of being excluded from the squad and subsequently reinstated, while being blamed for the team's failures despite playing through an injury, was the “last straw.”
Aubameyang concludes his international career with 83 appearances and 40 goals. He will continue his club career in Spain with Deportivo La Coruña, having recently moved from Marseille.
