Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang retires from Gabon national team

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has decided to retire from international football with the Gabon national team. The 37-year-old striker, Gabon's all-time leading scorer, cited feelings of being “humiliated and slandered” following the team's group-stage exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN).

Aubameyang expressed frustration over the treatment he received from authorities while playing through an injury during the tournament. Although he was briefly reintegrated after the initial fallout, the striker has chosen to step away from the Panthères.

New Gabon head coach Sébastien Migné has attempted to reconcile with the veteran, sending a personal letter to the Deportivo La Corogne forward. Migné expressed a desire for Aubameyang to decide how his international career ends, emphasizing the importance of his experience for a renewing generation. Despite the international retirement, Aubameyang continues his club career in Spain.
