Pierre-Olivier Costa resumes presidency of Mucem amid harassment allegations

Pierre-Olivier Costa has returned to his position as president of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (Mucem) in Marseille following a four-month protective suspension. His suspension, which began in June, was intended to restore trust within the institution following allegations of toxic management and deteriorating working conditions.

Two investigations are currently ongoing: an administrative inquiry by the General Inspectorate of Cultural Affairs regarding employee well-being, and a criminal investigation into allegations of moral and sexual harassment. Costa has denied the allegations and stated he has not yet been interviewed as part of the criminal probe. He intends to serve the remaining two years of his mandate.

The announcement of his return has triggered immediate backlash from staff. Following a general meeting of approximately 100 employees, union representatives announced a strike scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, to protest his reinstatement and demand his departure.
