Conservative Party of Canada focuses on affordability at B.C. caucus retreat

The Conservative Party of Canada held a caucus retreat in Penticton, British Columbia, focusing on economic affordability and opposition to potential European Union association. Party Leader Pierre Poilievre addressed his MPs, vowing to cut $150 billion in government spending to reduce debt, taxes, and inflation. He specifically targeted reductions in federal bureaucracy, foreign aid, and corporate welfare.

Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman addressed reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney has approached the European Union regarding Canada becoming an association member. Poilievre stated the party would not support any membership that introduces additional EU taxes or open border policies. This comes as Carney’s office expressed interest in moving beyond the current Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement to form a stronger alliance with the EU.

The retreat also comes amid internal party challenges and polling that shows the Conservatives trailing the Liberals. Poilievre emphasized the need for the Opposition to push back against the government's policies as the House of Commons prepares to return.
