Pierre Poilievre issues fiscal demands ahead of Canadian budget

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has issued a series of demands to the federal government ahead of the upcoming budget scheduled for November 5. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Poilievre called for the elimination of all federal taxes on diesel until Canada Day and the suspension of the GST on fuel until summer. He also proposed permanently scrapping the fuel standard tax to alleviate costs for Canadians.

Poilievre criticized the Liberal government for what he termed wasteful and inflationary spending, urging the administration to fulfill promises to reduce both the debt-to-GDP and deficit-to-GDP ratios. He noted that the current administration is overseeing the largest deficit outside of the COVID-19 pandemic and the highest spending as a share of GDP since the 1990s debt crisis.

The Parliamentary Budget Office has projected that the government will fail to meet its fiscal anchor of maintaining a declining deficit-to-GDP ratio, with increases expected in 2027-28 and 2029-30. The office forecasts a $63.3-billion deficit for fiscal 2026-27, with annual deficit levels potentially peaking at $70.2 billion the following year. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the upcoming budget will outline steps to build a more resilient and affordable Canada.
