Pierre Poilievre proposes eliminating federal diesel taxes
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has proposed a plan to eliminate federal taxes on diesel fuel sales until at least July 1, 2027. The proposal includes extending the current full fuel excise tax cut and removing the GST from diesel purchases.
Poilievre stated that while Canada produces sufficient diesel to meet national demand, transportation bottlenecks currently force some regions to rely on imports from the United States. To address this, he advocates for increasing refining capacity and building better transportation and storage infrastructure.
Additionally, the Conservative plan calls for the permanent removal of diesel production taxes by scrapping the federal industrial carbon tax and the Clean Fuel Standard. Poilievre argues these regulations increase production costs and discourage investment in refineries. He also suggests that refineries should be excluded from the federal impact assessment process to promote energy independence.
