Pierre Poilievre warns of national crisis amid conflicting crime data
Conservative Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre has recently emphasized a message of national crisis to his party members. During a caucus retreat in Penticton, British Columbia, Poilievre claimed that Canada is in trouble, citing issues such as a flat economy, job losses, rising crime, and unfair tariffs, while accusing the Liberal government of exacerbating these problems.
However, recent data from Statistics Canada appears to contradict some of these claims. The national crime severity index fell in 2025 for the second consecutive year, dropping to 75.01 from 81.27 in 2023. Additionally, the violent crime severity index decreased from 101.01 in 2023 to 97.19.
