Pierre Verger's new book on Yoruba culture to launch in São Paulo

A new book titled ‘Iorubahia – Escritos raros sobre a cultura iorubá e as relações entre Brasil e golfo do Benim’ is being released in São Paulo. The work compiles 12 essays written by the renowned photographer and ethnologist Pierre Verger between 1958 and 1972, a period during which he lived between Salvador, Brazil, and Nigeria.

Four of the essays in the collection are previously unpublished. The book is organized into three thematic axes: transatlantic history, Yoruba religion, and Yoruba culture and oral traditions. The publication aims to present a multifaceted view of Verger, moving beyond his reputation as a photographer to highlight his work as a researcher in anthropology, botany, and history.

The launch event is scheduled for September 16 at 7:00 PM at the Mário de Andrade Library. The project is a partnership between Instituto Çarê and the Fundação Pierre Verger, and entry to the event is free.
