Piet Mondrian’s ‘Composition III’ to be auctioned in London
Piet Mondrian’s 1920 masterpiece, ‘Composition III’, is set to go to auction at Christie’s in London on October 14 during Frieze Week. The painting, which represents a pivotal moment in the artist's development of the Neoplasticism style, is estimated to fetch between £20 million and £30 million (approximately 23 to 35 million euros).
This marks the first time the work has ever been offered at auction, arriving from a private collection. It is considered one of the most significant Mondrian works to appear in a European auction since 2009. The piece dates to a breakthrough year for the Dutch painter, during which he established his radical abstract idiom using primary colors and a grid of black lines.
