Pieter Coetzé wins World Aquatics Swimming World Cup title

South African swimmer Pieter Coetzé has secured the overall World Aquatics Swimming World Cup title and a $100,000 grand prize following a series of competitions in Baku, Tashkent, and Astana. The 22-year-old clinched the victory after a decisive 50m backstroke performance in Kazakhstan, finishing with 172.9 points to edge out Russian rival Egor Kornev.

During the three-week campaign, Coetzé set a new 50m backstroke short-course world record of 22.09 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 22.11 seconds held by Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov. He also established two new African 100m backstroke records. Coetzé becomes only the fifth South African male swimmer to win the overall World Cup crown.

Kolesnikov commented on the record-breaking performance, noting that Coetzé’s achievement was unexpected given his limited short-course racing experience. Coetzé will now prepare for the World Short Course Championships in Beijing this December.
