Pietracatella ricin killings prompt German expert investigation
In December 2025, Antonella Di Ielsi and her 15‑year‑old daughter Sara Di Vita died from ricin poisoning in their home in Pietracatella, Molise. Italian prosecutors have opened a double‑murder case and, with no suspects identified, have asked the FBI for data from a U.S. online platform linked to an anonymous profile nicknamed “mister X” that searched for ricin information months before the crime.
A joint team of German experts from the Robert Koch Institute and the Bundeskriminalamt, led by Dr. Christian Herzog and Dr. Sylvia Worbs, worked alongside Italian police to conduct a 14‑hour forensic sweep of the house. They collected 131 samples from furniture, clothing, surfaces and other items, sealed the premises and sent the material to laboratories in Berlin for analysis. Prosecutor Elvira Antonelli oversaw the operation, and Mayor Antonio Tomassone urged “truth and transparency” for the community. The investigation continues while authorities await laboratory results.
