Pietracatella ricin poisoning investigation identifies contaminated food

Investigations are ongoing in Pietracatella, Italy, following the deaths of Antonella Di Ielsi and her daughter, Sara Di Vita, due to ricin poisoning. German toxicology specialists have reportedly identified the specific food item that contained the toxin.

Authorities are now focusing on reconstructing the path of the poison. Investigators are examining 131 items seized from the family home in late July to determine how the toxin was introduced and to identify a potential perpetrator. While 70 food items were initially seized, the focus has shifted to understanding the contact surfaces or objects that may have facilitated the poisoning.

Ricin is a highly potent cytotoxic protein derived from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis at the ribosomal level, which can lead to severe clinical conditions. The investigation aims to distinguish whether this was an accidental contamination or a deliberate act.
