Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani faces overcrowding and poor conditions

The Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani is facing significant operational challenges, including overcrowding, poor hygienic conditions, and staff shortages. Reports indicate issues such as mold, heat, and limited access to clean water.

A visit by the Trapani Bar Association on August 5 revealed that approximately 570 detainees are currently held in the facility, despite an estimated usable capacity of only 480 places. These conditions raise concerns regarding Article 27 of the Italian Constitution, which mandates that punishments must respect human dignity and aim for the re-education of the convicted.
