Pietro Mascagni Conservatory faces severe funding cuts in Livorno

The Pietro Mascagni State Conservatory of Music in Livorno is facing a severe financial crisis due to significant reductions in municipal funding. According to the institution's faculty and leadership, annual contributions from the Municipality of Livorno are projected to drop from approximately 320,000 euros through 2024 to 50,000 euros in 2025, and potentially only 20,000 euros in 2026.

Director Federico Rovini and President Emanuele Rossi have emphasized the need for stable, multi-year financial commitments to ensure the institution's sustainability and the management of the Teatro Lazzeri. The conservatory is currently investing its own resources into the theater, which is intended to serve as a cultural asset for the entire city.

In response to the crisis, the Prefect of Livorno, Giancarlo Dionisi, met with conservatory leadership and students. Describing the institution as a cultural excellence and a community heritage, Dionisi issued an appeal to local businesses, foundations, and civil society to provide support. He expressed a commitment to facilitating dialogue between the conservatory and the productive sector to address the funding gap.
