Pietro Rescigno, renowned Italian civil law scholar, dies at 98

Renowned Italian legal scholar Pietro Rescigno has passed away in Rome at the age of 98. A prominent figure in 20th-century civil law, Rescigno's academic career spanned several prestigious institutions, including the Universities of Macerata, Pavia, and Bologna, before he joined Sapienza University of Rome in 1970. He served as a professor of civil law there until 2005, eventually becoming professor emeritus.

Rescigno was highly influential in legal education, authoring foundational texts such as the 'Manuale di diritto privato' and the 'Trattato dei contratti'. His contributions to Italian legal culture earned him membership in the Accademia dei Lincei and the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2014.

In 1999, he was the first recipient of the 'Duca di Amalfi – Maestro del Diritto' international award, a distinction established by the Municipality of Amalfi to honor significant personalities in legal culture. His funeral services are scheduled to take place at the Chiesa della Divina Sapienza at Sapienza University.
