Piglio: Controversy over relocation of Saint Francis statue
The statue of Saint Francis of Assisi has been returned to the square in front of the parish church in Piglio following a restoration process. The statue, which had suffered significant deterioration including damage to its hand and missing elements, was blessed by parish priest Don Raffaele Tarice during a Sunday Mass.
However, the relocation has sparked local disagreement. Official accounts from the 'Nuovi Orizzonti' community state the move was necessary to improve safety and accessibility in the square. Conversely, some residents and faithful claim the statue was relegated to a corner on an improvised concrete base to make room for vehicle traffic, contradicting previous assurances that it would be returned to its original central position.
While supporters celebrated the restoration with hymns and applause, critics argue the safety justifications are weak and note that the area where the original structure stood remains unaddressed.
