Pijijiapan sets Guinness World Record with 1,611-kg ball of quesillo

Producers in Pijijiapan, Chiapas, have set a new Guinness World Record by creating a 1,611-kilogram ball of quesillo (string cheese). The massive undertaking involved approximately 4,000 producers and eight local companies, including Quesería Pan de Dios and Lácteos y Derivados Mi Vaquita.

The event, which took place on August 29, 2026, was witnessed by roughly 6,600 people. This achievement significantly surpasses the region's previous record of 558 kilograms set in 2023.

Alongside the record attempt, the Chiapas Secretariat of Economy and Labor (SEyT) has ratified a request with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) to obtain a Geographical Indication protection for ‘Quesillo de Pijijiapan, Chiapas’. This legal recognition aims to protect the identity, tradition, and production processes of the local cheese industry, providing greater market certainty and economic opportunities for regional producers.
