Spata and Pikermi fire results in one fatality

A fatal fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, August 11, 2026, in the area of Spata and Pikermi, Attica, resulting in the death of one person. During the firefighting operation, a charred body was discovered inside a vehicle parked on the roadside near the Imeros Pefkos and Etos Steko areas.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated from the vehicle itself before spreading to surrounding low vegetation. One report indicates the driver may have lost control of the car after hitting rocks, with a witness noting the vehicle appeared to spin with the driver’s foot remaining on the accelerator. Authorities, including the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes, are conducting a pre-investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances of the death.

The fire was contained within approximately 30 minutes. The response involved 121 firefighters, 36 vehicles, two hiking teams, and aerial support including two aircraft and three helicopters. The operation included international assistance through the European pre-deployment program, with 23 firefighters and five vehicles from Romania and 18 firefighters and three vehicles from France participating in the effort. A 112 emergency alert was issued to residents in the broader area to remain on alert due to high fire risk conditions.
