Piškornica landfill poses environmental risks near Koprivnica

The Piškornica landfill near Koprivnica has become a significant environmental concern due to decades of waste accumulation. Located in the Koprivnički Ivanec municipality, the site serves as one of the largest waste disposal areas in this region of Croatia.

Concerns have been raised regarding the proximity of the landfill to major water pumping stations that supply drinking water to the local population. The accumulation of waste over more than forty years poses a potential risk to underground water sources. While the site was originally established in 1982 as a local communal landfill, it evolved into a larger regional center following the establishment of the Piškornica d.o.o. company in 2009 by four northern counties and the Koprivnički Ivanec municipality.
