Pilar Cisneros: Migration alert lifted after notification in campaign finance probe
The Costa Rican Public Ministry has lifted a migration alert against former legislator and presidential advisor Pilar Cisneros after successfully notifying her of her involvement in a judicial case. The alert had been issued following several failed attempts by authorities to reach her at her registered residence and via telephone during August.
Cisneros appeared at the Prosecutor General’s Office on Friday, where she provided personal information but did not undergo a formal investigative statement (indagatoria). Her defense requested that the formal statement be rescheduled for October, citing health concerns and the massive volume of the case file, which includes over 5,000 pages of documentation and a 12,000-page report from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
The investigation centers on alleged irregular campaign financing during the 2022 elections, specifically involving a trust known as Costa Rica Próspera. Authorities are examining whether the trust was used to facilitate illegal financing before Rodrigo Chaves was officially nominated as a presidential candidate. The case also involves other former lawmakers who have already provided statements.
