Pilar Sordo discusses mental health and communication crisis

Chilean psychologist and author Pilar Sordo has addressed the growing crisis in human communication and interpersonal relationships. She noted a significant decline in patience within modern social bonds, driven by accelerated lifestyles and constant digital stimulation, which often leads to rapid frustration and diminished listening capacities.

Sordo identified internal dialogue as the most fundamental unit of mental health. She explained that the way individuals speak to themselves determines their self-esteem and their perception of the world. A hostile internal dialogue can manifest in negative interactions with family, friends, and colleagues, thereby deepening conflict cycles.

Reflecting on the concept of finitude, Sordo emphasized that awareness of death can enhance the appreciation of life. She suggested that focusing on the present moment and practicing conscious patience—such as listening without interruption—can improve emotional stability and reduce anxiety, particularly in high-stress urban environments.
