Pilates becomes established part of Swiss fitness culture
Pilates has become an established part of Swiss movement culture rather than a niche activity. According to the ‘Sport Schweiz 2020’ study by the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO), 3.6 percent of the Swiss population aged 15 and older practice Pilates or Chi Pilates. The demographic is predominantly female, accounting for 80 percent of those in the ‘Yoga, Pilates, Body Mind’ category.
While overall sports activity in Switzerland has stagnated according to the ‘Sport Schweiz 2026’ report, there is a growing emphasis on precision and personalized instruction. Pilates Studio Anja in Zurich exemplifies this shift by focusing on individual care through private lessons, duet training, and online formats rather than large group classes. This aligns with BASPO data showing that a significant portion of practitioners engage in these activities within organized structures rather than independently.
